Job Purpose

The job holder is responsible for planning, coordinating and controlling boiler operations to ensure there is sufficient supply of good quality steam for efficient production of sugar.


Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Inspect all equipment and plant to ensure that they are in good working condition and submit a detailed plant inspection report to Engineering Manager – Mechanical.

  2. Plan periodic weekly maintenance tasks and ensures they are carried out well.

  3. Prepare annual maintenance schedules and agrees with Engineering Manager – Mechanical on manning levels and materials/spares requirements.

  4. Carry out annual maintenance tasks efficiently and within schedule.

  5. Request for spares required for routine plant maintenance.

  6. Ensure efficient running of boilers for parameters in steam demand, pressure and temperatures to be met.

  7. Works in coordination with quality control to ensure water treatment is done to desired standards for all industrial and domestic uses.

  8. Train personnel in the sub-section.

  9. Propose annual operating and maintenance budget.

  10. Monitor compliance to safety conditions for employees and equipment in the area.

  11. Propose plant modifications and carry out when approved.

  12. Plan, monitor and evaluate the performance of staff against set targets and objectives.


Minimum Qualifications and Experience

  1. Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering.

  2. Certificate/Diploma in cane sugar manufacturing is an added advantage

  3. Membership to a relevant professional body e.g., Institute of Engineers of Kenya

  4. Minimum five (5) years relevant experience gained from a large agricultural concern preferably sugar industry.
