Agriculture

Agriculture operations are administered by two departments of agriculture (Production) and Agriculture (Field Services)).  The departments have the mandate of ensuring development of cane, ratoon maintenance, harvesting and delivery of mature milling cane to the factory.

Nucleus
Out of the total acreage of 2,779 hectares, the Company has put a total of 2,275 hectares under cane in the Nucleus Estate which supplies an average of 15% of the cane crushed annually.

The Company has placed 400 hectares of its Nucleus Estate under irrigation. This is mainly to produce high quality seed and milling cane and also to do adaptation field research on early maturing and high yielding cane varieties.

Outgrowers
The total land available for cane in the outgrower farms is estimated at 16,171 hectares and it supplies 85% of the cane crushed annually mainly from the 5,000 farmers in the Chemelil zone.

The best year for cane development was in 2004/2005 when the Company and Outgrower institutions received funding from Kenya Sugar Board for cane development and payments for cane deliveries were made on time.

Others

Research
In order to attain optimum conditions of cane production at minimum cost, the Company has an Agronomy Section that performs research into practices aimed at this goal. New packages released by the Section are disseminated to farmers in liaison with extension staff.
